Energy-Aware Wireless Networking with Directional Antennas: The Case of Session-Based Broadcasting and Multicasting
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider ad hoc wireless networks that use directional antennas and have limited energy resources. To explore quantitatively the advantage offered by the use of directional antennas over the case of omnidirectional antennas, we consider the case of connection-oriented multicast traffic. Building upon our prior work on multicasting algorithms, we introduce two protocols that exploit the use of directional antennas and evaluate their performance. We observe significant improvement with respect to the omnidirectional case, in terms of both energy efficiency and network lifetime. Additionally, we show that further substantial increase in the network’s lifetime can be achieved by incorporating a simple measure of a node’s residual energy into the node’s cost function.

Energy-Limited Wireless Networking with Directional Antennas: The Case of Session-Based Multicasting
We consider ad hoc wireless networks that use directional antennas and have limited energy resources. The performance objectives of such networks depend largely on the application. However, a robust performance measure is the total traffic volume that the network can deliver when all nodes are equipped with a finite and non-renewable amount of energy. We show that the network’s lifetime can be ...
متن کاملEvaluation of a BIBD Based Directional MAC Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
The use of directional antennas in wireless ad hoc networks can significantly improve global performance due to a high spatial channel reuse. Nevertheless, its introduction poses new location dependent problems related to the MAC protocol. In this paper, the Balanced Incomplete Block Design theory has been exploited to develop a new MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks using directional ant...
متن کاملTree-Based Distributed Multicast Algorithms for Directional Communications and Lifetime Optimization in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
We consider the problem of maximizing the network lifetime in WANETs (wireless ad hoc networks) with limited energy resources using omnidirectional or directional antennas. Unlike most solutions that use a centralized multicast algorithm, we use graph-theoretic approach to solve the problem in a distributed manner. After providing a globally optimal solution for the special case of single multi...
متن کاملLocalized Energy-Aware Broadcast Protocol for Wireless Networks with Directional Antennas
We consider broadcast protocols in wireless networks that have limited energy and computation resources. The well-known algorithm, DBIP (Directional Broadcast Incremental Power), which exploits “Incremental Power” philosophy for wireless networks with directional antenna to construct broadcasting tree, provides very good results in terms of energy savings. Unfortunately, its computation is cent...
متن کاملA Location-aware Routing Scheme for Wireless Mesh Networks using Directional Antennas
This paper addresses the problem of neighbor discovery and route computation in wireless mesh networks where the wireless routers are equipped with directional antennas. Here we take advantage of the directional antennas capabilities to estimate the position of nearby nodes located in the first-hop neighborhood. The algorithm developed spreads the node's position information through the network...
